What an ESX file actually is
ESX is the native estimate file format of Xactimate, the estimating platform that dominates property insurance claims in North America. An ESX file isn't a picture of an estimate, it's the working data: sketch geometry, roof facets and pitches, lineal measurements, and the structure that line items attach to.
That distinction, working data versus document, is the entire reason this page exists. A PDF measurement report tells a human what the roof measures. An ESX measurement file tells Xactimate, directly, with no human transcription in between.

Without a claims-native file, the workflow on every roof claim includes a silent tax: the adjuster opens Xactimate's Sketch tab and re-draws the roof by hand from the PDF, facets, pitches, ridges, valleys, eaves, rakes. Industry practice puts that at 30-40 minutes for a typical residential claim, longer on cut-up geometry, plus whatever errors hand transcription introduces.
With native ESX delivery, the same step is: import the file. The geometry arrives pre-drawn, quantities sync to line items, and the estimate starts from measured truth instead of a re-drawing of it. How the import actually works

Buying rules for claims desks
Three rules cover most decisions. One: if the destination is Xactimate or Symbility, buy native format delivery first and price second, transcription time erases price savings fast. Two: 'integrates with' and 'delivers the file' are different products; integrations are excellent where your organization has them wired and a project where it doesn't.
